Spongy Fun - a review of SBSQ "Special Delivery", 2006-11-28
Okay, if you have children you are no doubt familiar with the Sponge man and Patrick. This book is a derivative not only of the show, in general, but of a particular show, specifically. This is the 'string as toy' story, and a synopsis is available both on this page and on the back of the book - use the "search inside this book" feature to read.
br /
br /Now this book is listed as a Ready-to-Read Level 2. This means that it is supposed to be for a child who is reading independently - a general range of First to Third grade is given.
br /
br /Well, a child would have to reading very well indeed to cope with this text. While the print is still large, there are a fair' amount of words per page, and an extensive vocabulary. Words your child will run across are: breakfast, kitchen, hundred, explained, thought, crazy, stupid, haven't, loyal, quickly, clarinet, practicing, amazing, accident, wasting, beautiful, cruel, as well as the characters names, of course.
br /
br /The principal value of this book is that it might provide motivation to some children to read on their own. The main drawbacks are that there is some name calling, and the fact that Squidward's kindness in fixing the string is lost in the storytelling. In this book he appears to be doing so more out of irritation than sympathy.
br /
br /Three Stars. [C+]. Good Spongy art. Okay Read-aloud. Story is typical of series, and characters call each other stupid and losers, which some parents may object to. It is unfortunate, that in this book that the sympathy element of the story is somewhat lost as it is not exactly clear why Squidward helps Spongebob repair his toy when it breaks.
