Boogeyman 2 (Jeff Betancourt, 2007)
br /
br /Betancourt's straight-to-video sequel to the Sam Raimi-produced Boogeyman is a minor surprise in that it's actually watchable (more so, in fact, than its predecessor). Both director Betancourt, who previously did editing work on such films as The United States of Leland and the superlative The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and screenwriter Brian Sieve were first-timers. So how is it that they turned out a better flick than the vets who did the first one? We may never know, but I'm glad they did.
br /
br /The story: Laura Porter (Danielle Savre, recently of Kaya) and her brother Henry (South of Nowhere's Matt Cohen), as children, saw the Boogeyman murder their parents. Fast-forward ten years, and Henry is a complete mess. Or he was. He's been in intensive therapy for a while, and he's getting out--a new man with a job interview lined up and a fresh outlook on life. In fact, therapy helped him so much that he suggests Laura, who's always been the strong one, might benefit from a bit of it. Between Henry and his doctor, Jessica Ryan (Xena: Warrior Princess' Renee O'Connor), she's convinced, and signs on. Problem is, she's not alone. It seems the Boogeyman considers Laura unfinished business, and that fact that there's a wing full of nubile, yet mentally disturbed, teens standing between the Boogeyman and Laura just makes the prospect all the more enticing.
br /
br /Needless to say, the result is a pastiche of amusing and inventive death scenes, but patching them together is a glue that actually contains halfway interesting characters who act like humans rather than cardboard cutouts. Sure, you have your stereotypes and some minor characters who can't act their ways out of a collective paper bag, but still, it's head and shoulders above the first movie, and really, those death scenes are all sorts of fun. ***

    Nothing Special, 2008-07-09
Boogeyman 2 has nothing to do with the first movie. Unless it's supposed to be the kids in it, but I don't wish to go out and rent it again to find out.
br /
br /So this chick enters a psychiatric ward cause shes afraid of the boogeyman. Her brother was recently there and it seems the boogeyman got to him. Some of the other patients in there are afraid of similar things and it gets worse for them when they start getting killed off one by one.
br /
br /This is far from original, and I probably would have given it 3 stars if it wasn't supposed to be a sequel to a movie it has nothing to do with. It won't surprise me if there is a Boogeyman 3 in the works and a completely different story again. They should know by now those attempts never go over well, bad movie or not.
br /
br /It goes for the typical done to death attempt at some kind of twist at the end, but like I said, it's been to done to death and does nothing for this film.
br /
br /If your a fan of B-grade horrors, this ones pretty average. It might be OK for a one night popcorn flick, but once you've seen it, I doubt you will ever feel the urge to watch it ever again.
br /
br /Just for the hell of adding it, the blond who gets naked in this movie made me want to puke... she can hold her head up high knowing now how much she helped this movie out by doing that... that was about the only thing scary to see in this movie.

    Another slasher movie..., 2008-05-17
I wasnt expecting too much from this sequel but my curiousity got the better of me. I watched with an open mind and it started out good. As it went along, I realized that it wasnt a supernatural being that was doing the killings. It was simply another slasher movie. I dont particularly like them, I prefer the supernatural stuff. So, that is why I was very dissapointed. The first Boogeyman was more like, the stuff you hear and dont see in the dark. This one, well, its a person in a suit. Bla, Bla, Bla. Its just ok, but I wouldnt want to see it again.

one of the best slasher flicks of the last decade, 2008-05-16
its a farcry from the original, but honestly.. who would want an actual sequel to Boogeyman? haha..
br /
br /the set up kind of reminded me of Nightmare on Elm Street 3, which also took place in a sort of mental ward. i found all the characters really believable, and i can honestly say i felt for some of them.
br /
br /the kills are excellent, and some of the best ive seen recently. i dont want to get into too many details, but ill just let you know, its bloody this time around. maggots crawling under someones skin, someone getting ripped in half, the removal of a still-beating heart, and lots more good stuff. lets just say, the violence delivered. in the realm of slashers, this is some hardcore stuff.
br /
br /there really isnt much in the way of plot developement. the main character saw her parents mudered as a child and hasnt recovered since, now shes checked into the mental hospital. there is a dark force preying on the secific fears of everyone in the building. varying from fear of the dark, to fear of gaining weight, and even fear of germs. every kill is brutal and creative.
br /
br /Tobin Bell does make a few appearances throughout the movie as the head of the mental ward, but it deffinitely wasnt enough screen time. well.. i probably wouldn't be satisfied unless he was starring.
br /
br /so in the end, if you're a horror fan, i would at leased give this a rental. slasher fans should buy it. its right up there with Hatchet and See no Evil as one of the best slashers in recent memory.
