Life is what happens when your busy making other plans..., 2008-12-19
I'm so glad I saw this movie despite the reviews. The framework of the script is ingenious - for those who want tight plot lines with bows at the end - this is not your film. But for those who want to take a trip down the stream of consciousness of a dying woman reconsidering her life choices - this is a GREAT film. br / br /I loved the way the film blended in the past and present - in one seamless line -- superbly played by Vanessa Redgrave. She cast a spell on me from her first few lines. She should have won an Oscar for her performance. As the director says in the commentary section - he saw the room without walls - because the characters mind had no walls between past and present. br / br /Beautifully and expertly directed and acted by all -- and many human moments in which you will see your own life reflected. What a gem. See it and be prepared to float along and you won't be disappointed but instead incredibly moved by our all too frail humanness - in the evening time.

A masterpiece!, 2008-11-17
I knew this movie would be good just looking at the list of names of people who are in it. And it was. Actually, it is a true masterpiece. br /It speaks to the heart of many many things. Regret; passion; bonds that exist between people; settling in life; memories. The story and how it unfolds are beautifully shown here with inconsequential 'holes'. Keep your focus on what is being told. br /I certainly didn't notice any flaws as I watched the movie. The acting, costumes, sets, photography and music blended so well, so seamlessly that it pulled me along as I watched it. br /We've all experienced what the lead characters have experienced. We all choose one way or another to go in our life. Each way has regrets as well as positive experiences, it's all in how you view it and what meaning things have for you. br /I doubt that anyone could spend time watching this movie and not come away untouched. Highly, highly recommended. Truly a must see.

Atmospheric, wonderful film, ensemble cast, 2008-09-30
I read the bad reviews, but I own this HD DVD, because I love the actresses in it. Once I watched it, I knew it would be a "rewatch". I am a fan of "Oscar" films, and love to sink my teeth into a good story. While this one does not qualify as an award winner, the generational storyline, music and solid storyline compliment the exceptional cast, without a doubt. I love the music and flashbacks. It feels like the Hours, Fried Green Tomatoes etc, although not quite as good. Redgrave, Collette, Streep, Close and Danes give fantastic performances. Even if the story lacks in parts, their performances are worth a look, if you're a fan of this genre.

can one spell ponderous? br /So many of the themes felt so dated, but perhaps that was the intention of the writers.

Thought Provoking, 2008-09-08
I have just finished watching Evening and felt I must see what others thought about it. I have not been moved by a film in a very long time - Evening did it for me. I was in awe of Vanessa Redgrave's performance, from her death bed. She is such an amazing actress. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Evening made me long for my best girlfriend/maid of honor, who has passed away; it made me long for my first/long lost love; and, it made me long for my mother, who has also passed away. I enjoyed watching the young Anne (Claire Danes) and then back to the older Anne (Vanessa Redgrave). I found it fascinating thinking about how as young people we live our lives as it comes to us, not knowing what the future holds. This film was heartbreaking, but not to be missed.
