*    1408 = waste of 120 minutes, 2010-03-10
Usually Steven King movies from books are pretty good. The STAND was great. Tommyknockers, Storm of the Century both great. 1408? He kept sticking his head out a window which continued to close on him and the door was jammed otherwise he could escape the room. 1408=yawner!!!

***** 1408 Widescreen Edition, 2010-03-08
The PG-13 rating given to 1408 belies this film's truly terrifying effects on its audience. Though it's far less gory than its peers, it has frightening moments and a creepy mood throughout. John Cusack (IDENTITY) plays Mike Enslin, a gifted writer who has turned his talents to paranormal travel books. His stays in haunted hotels never shake him, but he's intrigued by New York's Dolphin Hotel. Room 1408 has been the site of dozens of deaths, and this is a selling point for the skeptic in Mike. Despite the warnings of the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson, BLACK SNAKE MOAN), Mike resolves to stay in the haunted room. No one has lasted more than an hour in 1408, and Mike has his work cut out for him. Though Cusack got his acting pedigree in comedies, he proves he's able to adeptly carry a horror film. He's in practically every frame of the film, often alone, and he's great at making the audience share in his fear. This is the second English-language film from director Mikael Hafstrom (DERAILED), and he does a good job of establishing tension. A lot of the credit is due to the film's sound crew, whose detailed work goes far in giving 1408 its unsettling feeling. Like THE SHINING, this is based on writing from horror master Stephen King, and it's a similarly creepy tale set in a hotel. But in its execution, 1408 is far more indebted to classic horror films such as the original 1963 version of THE HAUNTING. I was most skeptical but I found that I really enjoyed this film. You have to give it a chance and you will be surprised, I did and I was .

*    unbelieveable, 2010-03-02
I've just finished watching the director's cut of 1408 and I have to say, this is the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. "Stephen King" and "Best movie adaption since The Shining" (ha!) on the cover made me buy. I'm not at all a horror fan, but I loved The Shining, and John Cusack Samuel L. Jackson as well. I feel sorry for both actors for having to have lent their names for this embarrasing movie for all eternity (they won't be able to erase it from [...] etc.). br / br /Do you remember that feeling you got at the end of Mulholland Drive? That notion of "this doesn't make sense"? I first got that feeling a couple of minutes after Cusack closed the room door (about 15 mins or so into the movie). The film starts off interesting (I caught myself staring at the TV all the way from the bathroom fearing I'd miss something). The special effects are great. They sent a couple of cold jolts down my spine and are good for a few scares. I think the reason why I didn't press the 'Stop' button is because I was hoping that, in the end, this would make sense (like some Hakan Nesser Mystery). The longer the film lasted however, the more I was thinking 'What it this?'. The only thing this film has in common with "The Shining", is that the setting of both is for the most part in (a) hotel(s). At least it got my girlfriend and I talking (ranting complaining) about the movie way past the credits. Obviously, this film lives from the psychedelic and eerie atmosphere that it tries to convey, with flashbacks, dreams (or reality? eeew..), illusions, blood and all that. Maybe I should have watched the Theatre version..at least that was in theatres. I can't imagine why else they would release a DVD like this upon mankind. br / br /I'm not going to talk you out of buying this. Buy it. Watch it. Make your own opinion. I was surprised to see that this film got more than one star with almost 200 reviews. Suppose therefore I might be wrong in saying what I am. Nonetheless though, this is, in my opinion, truly the worst film of all time. At least Plan 9 from Outer Space was funny - and a masterpiece in comparison. br / br /

***  It's just OK..., 2010-03-01
And it wasn't scary so much as there were jumpy moments. John Cusack is AMAZING - you can really tell he committed to the role 100%. br / br /The storyline sort of reminded me of The Shining in a way I was disappointed a little cause I didn't really get it (like what was the point?). All in all, we were entertained ... that is to say we laughed a lot.
