Proof that it's possible to try too hard, 2008-05-31
Temple Of Doom gets a lot of mixed reviews and a lot of people really dislike it saying it's anoying or even offensive. The trouble with this movie is easy to describe. It simply tries too hard. Buoyed up by the massive success of Raiders Of The Lost Ark I imagine Spielberg wanted to take the first film's pulp fiction spectacle to the max. For some reason I get an image of Roger De Brie from Mel Brooks Producers when Spielberg was thinking up the script "Yes! I see it! Start the film with a line of beautiful dancing chorus girls!" Admittedly the opening does have a kind of retro 1930s in Technicolour appeal, and the subsequent airplane journey woudn't be out of place in the first movie, but from there it's an exhausting journey through silliness. Screaming kung fu kids, screeching heroi....no, "female lead", pantomime villains, stupid, clumsy attempts at humour that are only very rarely genuinely amusing. This is closer to Terry Gilliam than Steven Spielberg. That's not to say that this isn't fun to watch at times, but it's a marked departure from the style of Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

br /I thought I might add to the not uncommon criticim of racism in this. Some ask "How can anyone with half a brain find this non-offensive?" Well thats' easy, it's because I know this is a movie. Yes, it has to be. It says "starring Harrison Ford, Kate Capshaw" etc at the beginning. These people are actors and they're paid to pretend in front of a camera to make money and entertain. Saying this is racist to Indians is like saying that Bond villain Goldfringer is offensive to overweight people, or Largo from Thnderball is offensive to one eyed Italians. If you apply real world concerns to a piece of cinematic fiction you must be a nightmare to sit next to in the movie theatre.

br /So...3 stars is my mark for this. You'll find this either a fun non stop action adventure flick or just plain annoying. I found it both in equal amounts.

    Best Jones to Date!!!, 2008-05-27
I have taken allot of criticism for stating this is the best of all of the Jones films. Regardless of everyone that says I'm crazy, I think if you are looking for some of the best actions sequences in film, this is the movie to see. From the moment the motley crew of Willie, Short Round, and Indy fell out of the sky in a rubber raft, the movie began its tour de force. When I talk Indy with my friends, they don't beleive me that this is the best, but I remind them that out of all the films, "Temple" has the most memorable scenes. From the famous dinner sequence, to the heart/pit drop, to the roller coaster mine shaft chase - to finally, the climax on the bridge, the action never stops. In fact, I believe the climax on the bridge not only to be one of the greatest action scenes in all of the Indy flicks, but of all action movies in general. Say what you will, but when you think of awesome Indy scenes, chances are, you will mention The Temple of Doom.

Entertaining, but average compared to the other two., 2008-05-05
THE TEMPLE OF DOOM starts off well. The first half of the film is fun and rousing. The beginning that takes place in a brawling Shanghai bar (it isn't as ominous as the beginning of RAIDERS, about matching the tone of CRUSADE'S beginning)is ultimately effective and leads to a quite improbable yet quite fun 'falling from jetplane in inflatable raft' sequence. The film dissolves from there.
br /I'll admit, the gross-out dinner was funny, but after the dialouge fight between Willie and Indy and the ever-amazing spike chamer scene, the film ceases to impress. The plot line is still firm, but it's the plot line itself that lacks, not its firmness. What was previously an engrossing, funny, and entertaining film stoops down to voodo, dark magic, and satanic cults.
br /I wouldn't mind the satanic cult as much if Indy was still the stereotypical action-hero he was in RAIDERS and CRUSADE. But his unnessecary acknowledgement of and brief succumbing to voodo magic was too much for me. After the sacrifices and voodo dolls end, and Indy is Indy again, the film tries to redeem itself with some straight Indy-style action and a stunning mine car chase, but by that time, it's in over its head. The film ends with an engrossing action scene that, once again, uses Hindu magic to accomplish what a whip and gun could have.
br /The film is worth watching to say you have seen it, and you might not mind the magic stuff as much as I did. The film is, overall, somewhat entertaining, and the first half almost lives up to expectations.
