A film that nobody could have predicted, a curve ball turned into a home run, 2010-07-24
Aladdin (1992) will either knock the socks off viewers, or confound
br /them as an incomprehensible cartoon and musical or finally,
br /constitute a piece of art for creators of art, in the sense that so
br /much is packed into the product, from an artistic point of view and
br /the manner in which it is done, that it suggests this release was
br /not entirely designed for the mass market or to have a mass appeal.
br /
br /First, the spectacular is definitely here, starting with the
br /top-quality animation work (colors, flow, designs, accuracy and
br /style of the drawings) which is expected from Disney. The historic
br /parallel story told about "Alladin" is woven into this script, with
br /entertainment being the overwhelming concern - a totally correct
br /decision. Those elements add up such that they satisfy paying
br /consumers and boost the replay value immensely.
br /
br /From an audio point of view, the jingle is immediately recognizable
br /as an Aerosmith's number ( "Rag Doll, livin' in a movie ... so fine
br /they'll never see ya leavin' by the back door"), here rerecorded
br /with a Louis Armstrong style and instrumentation.
br /
br /Secondly, a not small part of the story is farfetched, with no
br /imaginative boundaries ... this definitely takes this movie into a
br /completely other dimension, bringing it ever closer to what everyone
br /knows as dreams. Being incomprehensible is perhaps intentional, in
br /the sense that this picture is not designed ONLY for youths, but
br /also for parents and grown ups, both who will find themselves
br /laughing out loud, chuckling and amazed at the many sequences
br /throughout the 90 minutes. Some parts are sincere but hard-hitting,
br /tender and brutal at the same time.
br /
br /Finally, the wide-ranging, not timid and no-limits of the story,
br /much of it resulting from observation immersed in reality, calls
br /forth other emotions - sarcasm, parody or mockery of certain
br /cultural elements of non-Western countries. Examples is the concept
br /of pre-arranged marriages, monarchies, strong arm guards, beheadings
br /for minor misakes, a camel shown with a tongue hanging out from
br /overwork and thirst, social caste systems, etc.
br /
br /Or in other words, a fair bit seems extreme and not essential to a
br /cartoon, so that no doubt a part of the audience may find them
br /politically incorrect or controversial and out of step with the 21st
br /century.
br /
br /The often heard shouting raises eyebrows, considering that the
br /script concerns the romance between Aladdin and a princess.
br /
br /Taken together, the script rises above and beyond the mainstream,
br /which is why, perhaps, this movie is an artist's art . designed for
br /those who are jaded about revisiting again a classic story. e.g. a
br /showbiz style of speech is used at times to parody certain moments
br /in the able
br /
br /In sum, this is a film that nobody could have predicted .. a curve
br /ball turned into a home run.
