Editorial Review from Amazon.com:
How Eminem was able to assemble so many credible emcees of today and yesteryear (Jay-Z, Rakim) to endorse his Holly'hood coming-out party is anyone's guess. What is clear, however, is that (dare we say it) the Shady One might be growing up. On "Lose Yourself" Em abandons his callous, hardcore posturing to write thoughtful hood-centric coming-of-age lyrics that would make Melle Mel proud. On "Battle," Gang Starr's Guru tears through a sick beat from rap's most prolific producer, DJ Premier. Sadly, Nas wastes more valuable studio time dissing Jay-Z (ho hum) on "You Wanna Be Me." Interestingly, once you get past the living-legend love-in and peep the skills from Em's lesser-known Shady Records roster of underground wordsmiths, such as 50 Cent ("Wanksta") or Obie Trice ("Adrenaline Rush"), you might urge Em to consider giving up his thespian pursuits to become a full-time record executive. Not even the baffling inclusion of Macy Gray's humdrum "Time of Your Life" can sink this project. I--Dalton Higgins/I

A place in your collection, but not in history, 2004-10-13
Eminem has some unique poetic tricks in his writing that are even more surprising than the words and topics he employs. But this mix includes artists who are good but much more comforting (such Macy Gray, still underrated as a vocalist) and others are much less comforting and much less talented (such as 50 cent, vastly overrated as artist of any kind).

br /In toto, this "soundtrack" (itself a misnomer, since it includes many trakcs simply "inspired by" the movie, rather than from it) includes a fabulous first track, and then fifteen tracks that mire in mediocrcity. They're fine as background for cubicle work, but don't mark any unique or interesting turn in cultural history.

br /Yeah, we've had enough of Shady. But are cameo collections all that will follow?

    8 Mile Soundtrack, 2004-09-27
Over all, this is a really good CD.

br /1. Lose Yourself- 11/10 Best song, period. See my review of the single.
br /2. Love Me- 6/10 Not bad, but the chorus is kind of annoying.
br /3. 8 Mile- 8/10 Really good, but it doesn't get you heart pumping like Lose Yourself and isn't as raw as Rabbit Run.
br /4. Adrenaline Rush- 3/10 A real disappointment. I can't get over the chorus of this song, even though it's edited.
br /5. Places to Go- 7/10 I'm not a big 50 fan, but this was pretty good.
br /6. Rap Game- 7/10 Good song, but half of it is missing- edited out.
br /7. 8 Miles and Runnin'- 4/10 I'm a huge Jay-Z fan, but his track was a real let down.
br /8. Spit Shine- 7/10 I like it, but Xzibit is a required taste.
br /9. Time of My life- ?/10 Where did Macy Gray come from? I'm not sure how this made it onto the album.
br /10. U Wanna be Me- 5/10 NAS isn't really talking about anything except how "bad" Jay-Z is.
br /11. Wanksta- 7/10 50 is definately good on this album, and this is the better of his two songs.
br /12. Wasting my Time- ?/10 Another mystery track. Can anybody explain this?
br /13. R.A.K.I.M.- 6.5/10 Rakim is a legend, but the chorus on this track is reeeeeeally annoying.
br /14. That's my ***** fo' Real- 6/10 Pretty good.
br /15. Battle- 7/10 Excellent, but... What is it with the choruses on this album?
br /16. Rabbit Run- 8/10 Fantastic, it really gets your heart going, and the final line is cool. The only problem is that it isn't up to Eminem's usual rhyming ability.

br /Buy this Cd for the good songs- 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 15, and 16- and don't avoid it for the poorer ones. It really is worth it.
