The Last Flight, 2010-08-29
Bomber crews, 10 teammates, flew 24 missions and then were rotated stateside in order to help train new crews in the "how to's" of their jobs and [most imortant] how to stay alive. The crew of the 'Belle', a B-17 Fortress that could dish it out as well as take it, were the first crew to do so. This is their story mainly based on their final mission. The battle scenes are good white-knucklers that will make you feel the tension, the fear and the elation of feeling the wheels finally touchdown at home base. They were snot-nosed kids of 19 years or so when they left for the war, and were seasoned men when they completed their tour. br /Look for Harry Connick Jr and his Big Band performance. John Lithgow is a totally despicable PR man looking to make headlines at any cost that will get the folks back home buying war bonds. And the flying sequences are outstanding! br /Ya gotta check it out 4yerself! Memphis Belle (Snap Case)

Good Old American Spirit, 2010-08-13
I revisited this film after many years. It's a fun thing to do when you see actors that you might not have known at the time but went on to have good careers. This did not disappoint. It's loaded with lots of names and faces you've come to recognize over the years. br / br /This is pretty straight forward both in the story and the way it's told. The Memphis Belle was the first bomber in WWII to achieve 25 missions without being shot down which gave their crew a free ticket home. This is the story of the 25th mission. As in any number of other military movies, the first part is meeting those involved, particularly the crew. Then you head onto the mission itself. br / br /It's a pretty thrilling ride. You get to know enough about each of the crew members to care what happens to them when things hit the fan. The dog fights between the single pilot fighters are OK, (nothing to write home about) and the attacks on the bombers themselves have some pretty cool moments. Some of the dialogue during the flight isn't really very good but you're with these guys in their plight so you hang in with them and worry for them as certain circumstances arise. br / br /I don't know how many of the details are true or if there is a liberal sprinkling of Hollywood thrown in, but they keep you going up to the final moment. br / br /This is not good art but it's good craft. Sit back with the pizza and beer and have a good time.

A good old fashioned war movie, 2010-05-27
My uncle was fortunate enough to have known several of the members of the real Memphis Belle and he told me stories about the air raids of WW2. This is a very fictionalized account of the last battle that the Belle and her crew engaged in but it is a fairly accurate look at what it was really like. The action scenes are based on real events of the various raids over Germany and, while the characters are fictionalized, the overall movie is pretty much on target. You will not like all the characters because they are portrayed as humans, not as heroes, but you will sympathize with them and, in the end, be glad they all come home. Not my favorite B-17 movie (that would be "12 o'clock High") but a good one and part of my collection. Get it and enjoy.
